Jason Lee is one of my favorite actors. He was brilliant in Almost Famous, and his monologues in The Incredibles and Dogma are unmatched. He recently began starring in his second TV show: Memphis Beat, and each individual section of it is very good...but they don't go together.
Sherlock Holmes (the movie) seems like someone read Sherlock Holmes (the Wikipedia entry) and said to themselves "Hey, I can make a movie like that!" The differences between Holmes the literary character and Holmes the movie character are night and day, plus there were a few odd cinematography choices that were very distracting to me.
Amp: Overdrive advertises itself as an "Intense hit of cherry." There's no better way to describe this beverage. It's like when you go to Sonic and order a drink, and ask them to add some cherry syrup to it, and then they give it to you but it's not completely mixed and there's that pool of cherry syrup at the bottom and you take a big draw on the drinking straw and get the slam of incredibly powered up artificially flavored cherry flavoring.
If you like that... then you'll like Amp: Overdrive.
A while back I posted a review for Amp: Lightning, a tasty energy dring which reminded me of the awesome flavor of lemonade. My only complaint was that, at 220 calories, it wouldn't be part of my regular beverage rotation. Then I saw, on the shelf at my local megamart, Amp: Lightning, Sugar Free. Was this true? Was I actually going to be able to have my cake and eat it too?
The thing I like about Tim Burton movies, especially his movies made from books, is that he gives you 80% of what you're expecting, and 20% of something you're completely not, and somehow melds that into a really really good movie... and for the first half of this one, I'd thought I'd found an exception.
This movie is quite slow in the windup. Thank God he assumes that we know most of the characters from the original book, for it saves us the tedium of all the introductions.
Sam and Max Episode 6 of Season One, Dark Side of the Moon is a great continuation of the series. And it's got a really need puzzle solving boss battle that harkens back to the former days of glory for the Adventure game market.
However, this game doesn't really stand on it's own. It depends heavily on previous chunks of the game being well known to the players, and it's a bit of a letdown on the writing side of things. It's still great... but it's not the best of the series.
We were promised an epic, sweeping science fiction movie from one of the most talented filmmakers of our generation. It was supposed to be the most technologically advanced movie in history, and it was supposed to be a biting social commentary at that. It sounds like we were going to get the greatest movie ever created! What we got was Pocahontas meets DOOM, rendered by the Final Fantasy team.
I finally got around to seeing District 9. Without spoiling the movie, all I can say is that the presentation was interesting, the story was unique, and I wish humans would curl up and die already. More in-depth reviews and spoilers after the jump.
So you've read The Hunt For Red October and you think that makes you a submarine captain? Well, you've got lots to learn, grasshopper, but luckily you will have plenty of chances to make mistakes in Silent Hunter II, a submarine simulation game that's fun and educational to boot.
I played the original Silent Hunter in my Junior High computer lab years and years ago. I was impressed with the feeling of majesty, the feeling of depth, the feeling of getting nothing done that goes along with driving a submarine.
Bully: Scholarship Edition is a very well executed concept that's plagued by the same nonsense that damaged Grand Theft Auto. It would have gotten a higher review if it didn't crash all the time and if the buttons did what it said on the screen they would do.
