Porco Roso

An inflight movie for Japanese Air Lines?  Really?  It's true!  An excellent story roughly based on manga Hikōtei Jidai, Porko Rosso ("The Red Pig", in Italian) is actually a very good, relatively deep movie that just does a good job of being f

Silent Running

American Airlines now operates the American Space Fleet, and part of this fleet is a group of ships who carry domes of plant life from the thoroughly exploited Earth.  These ships are ordered to eject, and then nuke, all their domes.  The botanist of the Valley Forge decides to take action to save one of his domes.  Silent Running.

The title was interesting.  Silent Running evokes the image of submarines attempting to hide from enemies.  I was expecting a movie with action, where the botanist takes over the helm and attempts to keep his trees alive and convince everyone that they're worth keeping, while doing death defying feats of starship agility to keep those trees alive.

What I got was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

The Ωmega Man

The novel I Am Legend has been converted to Movie format four times so far:  First as The Last Man On Earth, and most recently as I Am Legend (with Will Smith) and I Am Omega (a cheap knockoff direct-to-video).

This version starring Charlton Heston is actually pretty good.  Way different from the book, but definitely a brainchild of a generation full of the wonders of science, and the fears of what we may do with those wonders.

Even if you've seen I Am Legend, you may enjoy this version's take on the tale.

Australia

Yea, I know what your thinking. Why the heck would any sane man watch this chick flick? Well I asked myself the same thing, till my mom said it has explosions in it. So I watched it. Its not too bad actually, only got a Win from me, but the rest of the show was decent too.

Princess Mononoke

My first thought upon seeing this movie was "Oh, Lord, another Save The Earth!!1! envirowacko movie."  I mean, it has all the trademarks:  Evil humans build industry and pilliage the landscape, and the spirits of the world fight back!  But getting past the preconcieved notions of any animation that talks about nature (caused by Captain Planet, I'm sure) allowed me to actually really enjoy this m

Revolutionary Road

Don't let the back of the box fool you, this movie is depressing as hell. It's brilliantly written, solidly acted, and very well directed, but it will make you hate life. If you're looking for a depressing movie, or you fancy yourself a "film buff" and want to see a well-made movie, get this. If you read the box and think this is a triumphant love story, you're wrong. Spoilers after the jump.
