Good Old Games is selling Sierra's The Incredible Machine series for $10. Having enjoyed the game in the past, I decided to buy it and give it a shot again. It's just as fun as I remember it... with some caveats.
The game pack comes with The Even More Incredible Machine (includes The Incredible Machine with extra puzzles), The Incredible Machine 3 (Windows version of The Incredible Machine 2), Return of the Incredible Machine: Contraptions and The Incredible Machine - Even More Contraptions.
So you've read The Hunt For Red October and you think that makes you a submarine captain? Well, you've got lots to learn, grasshopper, but luckily you will have plenty of chances to make mistakes in Silent Hunter II, a submarine simulation game that's fun and educational to boot.
I played the original Silent Hunter in my Junior High computer lab years and years ago. I was impressed with the feeling of majesty, the feeling of depth, the feeling of getting nothing done that goes along with driving a submarine.
One of the free pieces of software you can get from the Good Old Games service for free is Beneath a Steel Sky a point and click adventure published in 1994.
The 14-15 years that have gone by since publishing this game to today have not diminished the fun factor. This game is still technically playable, and the story is still loads of fun.
Oh and did I mention it's free? (Yeah, I have.)
Ah, the good old days in gaming. When men were real men, when games could reference popular culture with impunity, when choosing between CGA and EGA was a big deal. Everyone had a game or three they used back in the Amiga and Commodore 64 days before the dark times of the console wars. Up until now, you're only luck was to find abandonware, or perhaps find an old crack of the game and pirate your eyes out.
But now there's a better option: Good Old Games, or gog.com, a site that sells properly licensed (and properly cracked, so no more TSR Code Wheels or Manual Image Matching Games) Good Old Games, for cheap!
