I've had the chance recently to see the BBC4 Documentary, How Music Works... and as a musician, I have to say I was thoroughly entertained.

But it's not some technical boring lecture on music theory... I'm sure everyone could walk away from a showing having fully enjoyed the experience...

...if you can get your hands on it, that is.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, BBC 4 isn't currently releasing How Music Works on DVD... but if you're British and have access to BBC4, or know somebody who can record it for you, or are taking a vacation, or have the means to rig your own underwater cable, or perhaps they release it on BBC America, you should keep your eyes peeled for it.

The show steps through four nuts-and-bolts of music: the Melody, the Rhythm, the Harmony, and the Bass. It goes through the history of each portion of music, teasing apart what makes each bit special, and how it's developed along with music.

It's actually fun and exciting, full of really great music and simple infographics that help explain the theory. And at about 50 minutes a chapter, it's not that hard to watch!

If you get a chance, it's a great show to watch and enjoy, produced by the BBC. If you get your hands on it, let me know... I'd like to watch it again myself.

As a side note... if I was a vindictive person, I'd take the review score down a peg or two... not because of production quality or excellence in broadcasting, for those are fully worth the EPIC WIN. No, I'd cram down the score simply because the media company in question, the BBC, just doesn't get online media. I'd pay good money to own this series, except they haven't released it yet. In the olden days, making up a whole bunch of videotapes to ship overseas to a market of a few thousand musicians might have been daft. But this is the Internet era. I could suck the whole series down through my DSL in a few hours, for a few bucks... but only if they'd actually publish it. And for that, the BBC earns a WIN, for producing such good material, but making it wicked hard to get it legitimately.
